This full-time course is conducted in English for international students. It is also suitable for Swedish speaking students and teachers who would like the additional benefit of exchanging experiences with international students, increasing their possibilities of working as teachers in other countries and getting easier access to research in the field. We use online learning platform to facilitate discussion and reflection on the course literature.

Course content

  • Overview of the most common disabilities
  • Environmental factors and risk factors for children and youth including psychosocial problems
  • Assessment strategies based on International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in practice
  • Basic values and cultural differences in relation to Special Education
  • Individual educational plans and models for solving problems
  • Some educational/special educational teaching strategies aimed at participation
  • Assistive devices
  • Communication in a holistic perspective including AAC (alternative and augmentative communication)

Successful completion of upper secondary school and at least one year of successful studies at a university level in education (60 ECTS or equivalent) and a good command of written and spoken English (upper secondary school leaving certificate, TOEFL- test or equivalent).


Athena is the online learning platform we use to facilitate discussion and reflection on the course literature and where all information and resources can be found. Only admitted students to the course have access to the platform.
